Cry for me
Chairman: It is too pretty a day to be so unhappy. Did you fall down? Why so shy? Nothing to be ashamed of, we all stumble from time to time. Do you see that enchanting lady in green? Once when she was just a maiko, she fell clean off her wooden shoes.
[laughs]
Geisha in Green: [laughs] It’s true, I did.
Chairman: And now look at her, so elegant…
Geisha in Green: Mr. Chairman, shouldn’t we hurry? We will miss the beginning.
Chairman: We see the spring dances every year, we can spare a moment. What’s your name? Don’t be afraid to look at me. Do you like sweet plum or cherry?
Chiyo: You mean… to eat?
Chairman: I like sweet plum myself. Come. None of us find as much kindness in this life, as we should. My children wait for these every spring.
[hands her the ice and spoon]
Chiyo: [looks at geisha by the tree, smears some of the cherry ice on her lips] Now I’m a geisha too.
Chairman: [laughs] And so you are. How did you come by such surprising eyes?
Chiyo: My mother gave them to me.
Chairman: Generous of her, wasn’t it?
Chiyo: As you have been to me.
Chairman: Smile for me, won’t you?
[Chiyo smiles for him]
Chairman: There now, that is your gift to me.
[hands Chiyo his handkerchief with the change inside]
Chairman: This will buy your supper. Now promise me one thing, next time you take a tumble… no frowns.
[Chiyo nods]
Chairman: That’s better.

The last five minutes of Braveheart, every time. I also cried during The Fountain, and… the last season finale of Doctor Who. I’m a man. I can admit it.

i think it is a very, very good thing to be able to cry. i think you should let yourself cry, even if it takes make-believe movies and whatnot to do so.
the world is a tragic place. why try to pretend it’s not? but it’s also beautiful. and sometimes that can lead to just as many tears…

Oh, and i cry while watching Moulin Rouge. Everytime.

I second Moulin Rouge, but not every time. I watch it too much to cry every time. I teared up a little today when I was watching Little Miss Sunshine. I get the sniffles almost every time I watch old movies on the Turner Classics channel… though that may also have something to do with how I usually watch those when I’m lonely and sick at home.
I cried during the Rohirrim charge as well, but that’s a whole different set of emotions there.

Tristan, wtf, men don’t cry during movies. Actualy, I’m pretty sure we don’t even have tear ducts. When you see a man cry its actualy pure lame seeping out from his pores.
Just kidding of course, I mean, I always get a bit choked up at the end of The Labyrinth when Sarah is all “I’m sad that I’ll never see my monster friends again”. Then, all of a sudden, its all, like, “BAM!”, they’re right fricken there in the real world! Hoggle, Sir Didymus, Ludo, all of them. They all dance around and that rockin’ Bowie tune “Underground” kicks in. A real tear jerker.

The Neanderthal minds behind the films you ignorant swine mention are not alone in the activation of the tear ducts. My music, besids being better than most, is also so in tune with the emotions of the masses that tears are unavoidable.
My son’s music is worth listening to also, if you prefer talentless emotion instead.
“Will you dance…”

Well I just cried all the way through Shadowlands, but that could be because I was drinking heavily . . .
Hi Tristan! I hope it’s you who I know and not some random guy. It sounds like you, I found you through Michael’s blog, hope you don’t mind.
shit I may regret posting while hungover hope i didn’t make any spelling mistakes that would be embarrassing

Interesting hearing you mention weeping during such moments. During Geisha at that moment you mention I felt weary – of the world, but not enough to cry about it, more about wanting to conquer it.
Braveheart, no thanks, Willisam Wallace isn’t really the hero of the Scots, though I could be wrong, but that is generally how the Scotts see it themselves, giving the honor to Robert the Bruce.
Moulin Rouge, Lord no. The Passion? Definately, quite often. As gruesome as Gibson portrays forgiveness, the supporting actors crunched my defense and I had no choice but to weep for those who wanted to help Jesus but ultimately failed Him.
I agree that it is hard to cry during movies, their fails to be a work of art in film that is so masterfully done that it bypasses my reality sensors (“warning: this is just a movie” goes on in mind too often).
I cried in Kill Bill 2 when Black Mamba got her second eye taken out, but that was a combination of disgust and laughter.
Actually, one movie that nearly did it was I Am Sam. Schindler’s List did the first time, but not now, although it is only because I know the details of the story. The Korean made movie Tae-Gu-Ki (“Korean flag”) about 2 brothers seperated during the Korean War.
That’s it for me.
If you liked Geisha, read the book, it really is better.
My two cents…

Hey Keira. Good to hear from you. I’m pretty sure I’m the Tristan you know, though which ‘Micheal’ has a blog that leads to me?
Back to the movies thing, I doubt if I ever cry when I’m watching with someone else. Very rarely, at any rate. I think that scene in The Passion may have brought out a tear in the theatre. But when alone, and especially, as Keira points out, when partly drunk or overtired or something like that, it’s easier to sink in and suspend the fact that the movie’s “only a movie”, as they say.

All sobered up now and making my rounds to see how much damage was done. What’s up with my capitalization at the end there? Lord.
As for the Michael: you posted on our former professor’s blog and so I thought the Tristan must be you.
I definitely don’t cry in the theatre. Usually not in company of any sort, unless they’re people that I am very comfortable with. But alone? Bring on the tears.
And only someone with a heart of stone would fail to tear up during the Doctor Who finale.

I’ll third the bit about only crying when I’m watching movies alone. I can only remember tearing up once when watching with others.

I don’t think that I have ever cried during a movie. Maybe its because I don’t feel that movies accurately convey reality, so I always feel sort of disconnected as an audience member. I have never seen Schindler’s List, but I have meant to for some time. I usually laugh during movies, as most of the movies I watch are comedies, like Fargo.
One time my friend and I were watching Garden State, I made fun of him for crying, he gave me the finger, and I remembered that he just broke up with his girlfriend. He forgave me several months later. Not one of my brighter moments, but now it’s funny, mostly because it makes me seem like an insensitive clod. Most of the funny things in my life stem from my idiocy.

sure they don’t convey reality, but most of them (the good ones of course) convey the emotions and feelings OF reality, or at least attempt to. and some do it damn successfully i’ll venture to say…

Hmm… It could be that China has started to have it’s effect on you, because we Asians are more prone to show and express emotion, than the stiff, proud Lone Rangers of North America.
(p.s. Ok, I’m only half-asian. whatever)
